BENDRONAIG BOTHY
CONCEPT & DESIGN
OVERVIEW
A bothy is a mountain hut or cottage, usually left unlocked and available for anyone to use free of charge and they are found in and around the remote mountainous areas of Scotland. The Bendronaig Bothy is high in the mountains on the lands of the Attadale Estate in the West Highlands not far from the Isle of Syke. The bothy had been neglected for years and had fallen into disrepair requiring extensive restoration and rebuilding
We had worked on the estate previously, involved in minor restoration and landscaping projects, and were invited to do the restoration work as the clients could simply not find a local contactor willing to work in such a remote location. Together with friend and cabinet maker Paul D’Andrea, Gregory worked 7 days a week for 7 weeks and restored the structure from the foundations up. The cladding and roofing we striped, windows pulled apart, rotten timbers replaced and all finished off with a few coats of paint. It was a hard, cold, wet summer.
