CONCEPT & DESIGN

OVERVIEW

Situated only 160 km from Cape Town, Britania Bay is a special place – one of the first bays to be developed up the West Coast, it still retains the simplicity of raw nature. The original house located on a private rocky beach was built over time by Flip and Bronwen in the 1970’s as a weekend getaway but grew too small for the extended family and longer stays.

The house consisted of a simple open plan living area and loft bedrooms and a separate structure used as a garage, store and informal accommodation. The Brief called for a new double garage, additional bedrooms and a linked self-catering flat.
The original structures where retained, extended and linked to the new accommodation via the entrance foyer and larger kitchen. Working with the existing volumes and the addition of lower linking elements, the natural geometry of the site creates a surprising variety of spaces, views and experiences. The typical west coast white walls and gables of the old house are combined with more expressive materials like off-shutter concrete and natural timbers resulting in a rich, textured home that blends in to the striking yet delicate setting.
